Multi-Skilled Engineer – Tier III Data Centre

Job Purpose
The Multi-Skilled Engineer will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of critical infrastructure systems within a Tier III data centre environment. The role ensures maximum uptime, resilience, and compliance with operational standards while supporting 24/7 mission-critical operations.
The engineer will carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and emergency response activities across electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and building systems.
The successful candidate will work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern. The shifts will vary between days, nights and weekends, including public holidays. You will be required to work additional hours to cover annual leave and sickness.
Key Responsibilities
Critical Infrastructure Operations
- Operate and maintain Tier III critical systems to ensure continuous availability.
- Monitor Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Monitoring Systems (EMS), and alarm systems.
- Respond to critical alarms and incidents within agreed SLAs.
- Perform routine inspections of all plant and equipment.
Electrical Systems
- Maintain and troubleshoot:
- UPS systems
- LV/HV distribution systems
- Generators and fuel systems
- Switchgear and transformers
- PDUs and STSs
- Emergency lighting systems
- Support electrical isolations and switching operations in line with authorised procedures.
Mechanical & HVAC Systems
- Maintain and monitor:
- CRAC/CRAH units
- Chillers and cooling systems
- Pumps, valves, and pipework
- Fire suppression systems
- Water treatment systems
- Diagnose faults and coordinate repairs to minimise downtime risk.
Planned & Reactive Maintenance
- Carry out PPM activities in accordance with maintenance schedules.
- Complete reactive maintenance tasks and root cause analysis.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are fully documented using CMMS systems.
- Escort and supervise specialist subcontractors on site.
Compliance & Safety
- Follow Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), Permit to Work (PTW), and Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
- Ensure compliance with:
- Health & Safety legislation
- ISO standards
- Data centre operational procedures
- Participate in emergency response and disaster recovery exercises.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and incident reports.
- Produce technical reports following faults or outages.
- Update asset records and maintenance documentation.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential Experience
- Experience working in a mission-critical or Tier III/Tier IV data centre environment.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical building services systems.
- Experience with critical power infrastructure and cooling systems.
- Ability to fault-find under pressure in live environments.
- Understanding of redundancy concepts (N+1, 2N, concurrently maintainable systems).
- Familiarity with BMS and CMMS platforms.
- Good understanding of health & safety procedures and permits.
- Computer literate with experience of Office 365 applications.
Desirable
- Experience working in colocation or hyperscale data centres.
- HV Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) experience.
- Knowledge of energy efficiency and environmental monitoring systems.
- IT/network awareness within data centre environments.
Qualifications
- City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3 in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (preferred).
- HV/LV switching certification (desirable).
- IOSH or NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification (desirable).
